For the sequel, complex user interface design and animations were required to create interactive 3D holographic controls for ‘Scrapper’, one of the new giant robots.
To differentiate from the other Jaeger slick and seamless interfaces, we created a retro fairground Wurlitzer feel. The holographic designs and bright colour palette also reflected the character’s playful personality and reflected the ‘junkyard’ nature of the robot itself.
As the original Pacific Rim UI took inspiration from military displays, an advanced visual look and feel was required for the sequel. We referenced modern jet fighter HUDs for the new pilot interfaces, while maintaining visual continuity across all the designs.
We concepted, modelled and animated each element to build up an interactive toolkit of 3D assets, delivering each shot as multiple layered passes, tracked and ready for final compositing.
